So you check your oil, and it looks black. Maybe it looks a little low, so you think, if I just add some oil into what I have, doesn't that kind of make it like an oil change?
Not at all.
The reason you need to change your oil is not to top it off and make sure it's full. The reason to change it is to remove that old oil because it's been burnt by a heated engine, it has lost some of its viscosity, and it no long has the cleaning power it did before.
You oil is a viscous liquid that lubricates your car's engine, and keeps the parts from touching one another. When oil is clean and new, it forms a liquid barrier between one part and another.
As oil is heated, it loses part of that viscosity, and the additives break down, no longer delivering the same benefits it used to even a month ago. That is why your owner's manual will recommend the oil changes it does, and why it voids the warranty if you do not change it in a timely manner.
Do yourself and your car a favor. Schedule a fluid check and an oil change today!
