Believe it or not, but Jose Cuervo®, the world-famous tequila-maker, and Ford Motor Company have a passion in common: the environment.
Every year, Jose Cuervo grows millions of agave plants, which are roasted and pressed to release the sugary sap within their succulent leaves. The sap goes on to become tequila, but the rest of the plant has a less glamorous fate. Some is used in artisan crafts, particularly paper, but most ends up becoming fertilizer, or is discarded.
The brewery wanted to do something better with its byproducts, and Ford is always on the lookout for greener, more renewable materials to replace the petroleum-based products in their cars. Ford's materials sustainability researchers believe agave fiber may have the right heat-resistance, durability, and aesthetic qualities to make it suitable for a composite bioplastic.
